Narrative

Image
Tvzetan Todorov came up with the theory that all of the fictional environment should begin with a state of equilibrium. An equilibrium is where every opposing thing is calm and of no disruption. This equilibrium is then disrupted or suffers some sort of disequilibrium. This cycle continues to where someone recognises the disruption and attempts to repair. If the disruption is repaired, we would then reach a new equilibrium. Vladimir Propp came up with the theory that all narrative feature's a set of "stock characters". These are comprised of: A Hero A False Hero A Villain A False Villain A Donor A Helper A Princess/ Prize A Father/ Role Model A Dispatcher and, A Victim Claude Levi-Strauss created the theory of binary opposites. The meant that there was a constant creation of conflict or opposition that propels a narrative. The narrative could only end on a resolution of the conflict. These binary opposites could be: Visua...

High-key & Low-key Lighting

Image
High-key lighting aims to reduce the lighting ratio in a scene, it can also be used to set a upbeat mood in Movies/ TV Shows and Photography. High-key lighting also know for not presenting shadows. Between 1950 to 1970, high-key lighting was achieved through multiple light sources lighting a scene, this resulted in a uniform lighting pattern with very little modelling. However, now we use hot light sources to achieve a more efficient fluorescent soft lights which are similar to the original ways. Some examples of High-key lighting would be, Guardians of the Galaxy as it is a Fantasy and Sci-Fi movie and Star Trek as it is also a Fantasy and Sci-Fi TV Show. Low-key lighting usually only uses the Key light to illuminate the subject. This creates a shadow which makes the product look more realistic. This type of lighting is often used in Movies/ TV Shows that are trying to convey realism. For example, a TV Show like Sherlock or EastEnders would show shadows as it is what we...

Three-point Lighting

Image
Three point lighting is the three separate positions of the lights that allows the photographer to position the lights how they desire whist simultaneously controlling the shading and shadows that are on the subject.  The photographer can control the intensity on the light and its radius by opening and closing the lights "barn doors". In a group, we explored Three-Point Lighting and how it an effect images and emotions. Here are our examples. The Key Light is usually the lightest out of the three, this means it provides the most detail to the subject. The Fill Light has a medium intensity and fills in all gaps of shadows left by the Key Light, this is so that the light is even across all of the subject's face.  The Hair Light illuminates the back of the subject so that they stand out from the background.

5 Elements to Mise-en-Scène

Image
Settings The film setting is the location in which the movie, tv show, photoshoot etc. was produced. Using a location is a separate but similar way of filming on studio sets. Some movies make up a location using green screens and others use a (usually well known) real life place. Shooting of location makes the product have great "realism". Depending what the audience is seeing on screen, the location can manipulate their thoughts. For example, this picture of house makes the audience feel threatened and scared as it is severely un-kept. Props (property) Props are used by actors on stage or set and can be a range of different objects to heighten or convey different things to the audience. A prop is considered to be anything movable or portable usually distinct from the actors, scenery and costumes. For example, these props are chosen for an action movie to convey danger to the audiences. Costume, Hair & Makeup The way a person looks instantly det...

Adobe Premier Shortcuts

Image
Adobe Premier is a non-linear editing system The operation of it has shortcuts Spacebar is to play and pause Arrow Keys, tap or hold to advance Command + z = undo, this is a shortcut I used when I made a mistake. The most common mistake I make on Premier Pro is mis-cutting/ over-cutting some footage. Command + x = cut, this shortcut is to get rid of unwanted footage or audio.  Command + c = copy, this shortcut is to copy any selected things and is later followed by Command + v = paste which pastes the things you've just copied. find out what z and v do without using command I = in, O = out Z is the zoom tool V is the select tool Command + shift + 4, this is a form of screen grabbing whatever you want (similar to a screen shot) and will save to the MacBooks background. We first started by adding the bins and started up the project. We sorted through the footage and found the what was useful and what wasn't. After, we added the music audio and m...

Foley Sound - 21/09/2018

Image
Foley artist create sound for movies in post production. These sounds can be anything, to the sounds of waves, to the noise of horse hooves. After learning about what a Foley artist does, we where set a task to make audio for a silent movie scene. Patrick, Jaimie and I where set a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean (the sword fight between Captain Jack and William Turner in the blacksmith). There where some aspects of making audio that where more difficult than others. For example, determining what the dialogue between the characters was easy however planning the Foley for the sound of swords was difficult as we had to use spoons.

Sounds

Image
Sound is everything that can be heard in a scene. The key elements of sound are: Location sound Music Dialogue Sound Effects Types of Sound in Media Diegetic is sound that comes from a scene, whether it is off or on camera, it is still diegetic as it is made through the origin of the film world. Examples of diegetic sounds are talking, cars or vehicles and glass breaking/ gun fire. Non-Diegetic sounds are mainly music or soundtracks added during the film's post-production. An example of non-diegetic sound is the music you'd associate with a specific character, which usually plays whenever the character is on the screen. Crescendo sound is the build up of music that is used to suggest that something (usually bad) is about to happen. Examples of this would be every time a jump-scare is about to happen in horror movies. On the other hand, a Diminuendo is where the music dies down to imply that the threat has gone away. Another type of sound that goes wit...

Audio - 20/09/2018

Image
Voice, Music and Sound Effects The human ear can hear anything between 20Hz to 20,000Hz On the software, you'll see a waveform instead of a wavelength (this will be in Sine form) 2 channels, left and right (stereo) Recording voice is related to stereo Two types of microphone: Onboard mic and an External mic (Shotgun Directional) aka a 416 Why record with two microphones? - Onboard mic records ambient sounds & the voice, the External mic records only the voice. Also, it is better to have two recordings as it is possible for one mic to break. Having two microphones means you'll have a backup. (VU Meter). (PPM Meter). Voice is 5.5 PPM SFX is 3 PPM Music is 4 PPM Ads are 6 PPM This is the Audio Level 00;00;00;00 in the timeline is called a 'timecode'.

About Me

This blog is for the my media and film studies level 3 course at college. From this course, I would like to gain the skills and techniques needed to control a movie set's work enviroment as I would like to become a director. Becoming a director interests me as I would love to make products and movies that inspire young minds and that they enjoy.

Audience Demographics

Image
Audience's can be categorised in demographics. It is based around a populations dynamic living. Demography incorporates size, structure and spatial or temporal changes in them in response to birth, migration, aging and death. Groups can be defined by things such as education, nationality, religion, ethnicity. As well as: Age Class Gender Household size, homeowner Marital Status Occupation and Income Disposable income is the type of income that remains after deduction of taxes and social security, available to spend or save depending on what one wishes to do with it. Classes range between A & E, the way the classes are set is through the job that you have and the amount of money you earn. As well as this, a person can be born into a class depending on their parents' lifestyle.

Gotham Review

Image
Season One Overall, I would rate this season 8/10. The season begins with the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, with is later investigated by the new recruit to the G.C.P.D James "Jim" Gordon and his partner Harvey Bullock. The show so far is extremely interesting, however I was unhappy with the 'Red Hood' episode (S1Ep17) as although one of the characters captured the comical mastermind behind the red hood, they did end up killing the character within the first ten minutes of the episode.

Photoshop Poster - 19/09/2018

Image
Report My two ideas are constructed around the same characters and alternative universe. I'm trying to base a lot of my projects around DC or Marvel as I would like to work with Fantasy and Sci-Fi movies. I feel that my choices of the "Titans" poster will attract my teenage target audience as teenagers enjoy Sci-Fi and Fantasy movies/ TV Shows. As well as this, I think that my target audience will be both male, female and others as the ganres of Titan's apply to both genders and their interests. Examples of posters that relate and are similar to my posters: (Secondary source, tailer by DC about the new Titans show). My posters: This is the poster with guidelines, I split the poster into two colums as there are two character's shown. We used photoshop for the first time and where asked to make a poster about something of our choice. I decided to make a poster about the upcoming TV Show called ...

Tripod & Camera Set Up

Image
Our first practicle was based around setting up a camera and tripod. Justin showed us how to attach the camera to the tripod. You must unlock part of the tripod and slide the camera on from the back till you hear clicks. He also showed us how to level the tripod so that the shot wouldn't be lopsided. (This video a secondary source from YouTube explaining how to put camera on a tripod).
